At least three commercial boats carrying food commodities from Juba to Bor capsized in the Nile over the weekend.
The Secretary of the Boat Union in Bor, Elijah Thok-bor says the boats capsized in different days.

Thok-bor says traders have lost goods worth about 14 million South Sudanese pounds.

“The first boat sunk on Saturday morning in Mangala and the other one happened near Pariak. The last one occurred last night and we have not yet received the full details. All the items were lost. Fortunately no life was lost during the incident”, Thok-bor explains.

He further said that the sinking of the boats was as a result of overloading.

Mabior Kuol Ajok the market supervisor in Bor for chamber of commerce said this may lead to scarcity of goods in the market further leading to a hike in the prices of goods.

Mabior said the traders had resorted to using river transport as the road between Juba and Bor has become impassable due to the recent heavy rains.
