South Sudan’s Presidential Spokesman Ateny Wek Ateny has sparked controversy among South Sudanese on social media after urging Raila to concede defeat before the tallying of votes has been completed.

Ateny Wek wrote, “this is the bitterness of peoples’ choice going against yours. Raila should concede defeat and move on with his life.” The response among South Sudanese has been quick and damning.

Many South Sudanese are questioning him why, as a government official, is he interfering in internal affairs of another country. The recklessness of the Presidential spokesman is shocking in light of recent xenophobic threats by some Kenyans calling for the deportation of South Sudanese.

Ateny has not clarified whether this is the official position South Sudan’s presidency and why he is calling for Mr Raila Odinga to concede defeat while vote counting is ongoing. In addition, the results are provisional and have not been declared official by Kenya’s electoral commission.
