City businessman Francis Amin has been elected the new South Sudan Football Association president replacing the former controversial president Chabur Goc Alei.

Amin defeated his two competitors Lual Maluk and Arop Joh in an election held at Juba Landmark Hotel this evening. Reforms and better management of football in South Sudan have been his main pledges.

The country has endured torrid times since the world’s governing body suspended funding due to an alleged corruption at the country’s football governing body.

The elections which were due to be held in February were postponed many times after some of the candidates had complained of malpractices in the conduct of the vote. Amin secured 22 votes out of 34. Benasio Amum Deng is elected the vice president after defeating Sestilio Juba Lerib.

Also elected today are Maria Christopher and Mary Tokina in the women’s committee and in the referee’s committee, Atem Atem was elected as chairman with James Amum as his deputy, while in the coaching committee, Abdulraham Rajab was elected chairman with Kon Akol as his deputy.

Amin, together with Dr. Tong, the Secretary General of the South Sudan Olympics Committee, last week made it possible for the national team the Bright Stars to honour their 2019 Afcon qualifying match against Burundi on Saturday. The trip to Bujumbura was nearly aborted due to unavailability of funds.

The elections were conducted in presence FIFA and CAF representatives who flew into the country on Wednesday.
