Lieutenant Colonel Chan Garang Lual who mutinied on the 24th of October has allegedly declared his allegiance to Riek Machar. In a press statement, Riek’s militia deputy spokesman Lam Paul said that Chan joined their militia on the 2nd of November.
Interestingly, during an extensive interview on the 4th of November with Australia’s SBS Radio Dinka, Chan did not mention his support for Riek Machar. He only pledged his allegiance to Malong.
It is not clear whether Chan joined Riek voluntarily or was forced by circumstances with all his routes to escape to Northern Bahr el Ghazal blocked by the SPLA or various rebellious militias.
