At least one person was killed and two others injured in a brawl before a wrestling match could start in Twic South County of Jonglei State prompting local officials to emphasize that a ban on wrestling issued last year still stands.

Twic South County commissioner Daniel Deng, told media on Saturday that the incident occurred at Wun-Lir between youth from Athok and Awan clans after a misunderstanding before a wresting match, adding one person succumbed to gunshot wounds while two others sustained heavy injuries.

He pointed out that the suspects have been arrested and are undergoing investigation.

Deng noted that the planned wrestling was in defiance of a ban issued by the state last year prohibiting wrestling adding that he will fine community chiefs and organizers of the match as a lesson to deter them.

Last month, two people were injured in a brawl during a wrestling match in Twic Centre County’s Paliou.
